    The New Canadians Health Centre provides coordinated and multidisciplinary refugee-centered primary health care for a target population of government assisted and privately sponsored refugees as well as refugee claimants. Informed by refugees’ priorities that are communicated through culturally, medically, and epidemiologically appropriate assessments, the supports create ready access to a comprehensive set of clinic and community services.

    We are a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team of experienced family medicine physicians and specialists with expertise in refugee health, working side-by-side with nurses, mental health therapists, and settlement counsellors, aided by community support workers, cultural brokers, social workers, and cultural/language interpreters, to support healthy and productive new Canadians contributing to the social, cultural, and economic well-being of their communities.

    Role Description:

    As an Activity Worker - Health Support Services, you will enhance and maintain health programs that support immigrants and refugees in their transition into life in Canada. You will be part of a compassionate team dedicated to welcoming and serving newcomer individuals and families. Possessing a sound understanding of the community and determinants of health is essential for this position.

    The supervision plan for these positions includes weekly meetings with the Executive Director/Lead Office Assistant/Medical Director/Clinical Team to develop and review progress on the goals of this position. The mentorship will also be provided by the Executive Director/Lead Office Assistant / Medical Director / Clinical Team on an informal daily basis by supporting and empowering the Community Health Navigator to develop the skills listed above. The skills developed in this role will increase the person’s capacity to take on leadership roles in future employment opportunities.

    Job Responsibilities (includes but are not limited to):

    •    Coordinating health-related appointments and appropriate interpretation and transportation services

    •   Maintaining a strong commitment to Patient and Family Centered Care

    •   Supporting clients with health system navigation

    •   Advocating on behalf of refugee patients who are seeking emergency hospital services

    •   Educating others about issues and experiences significant to refugee populations

    •   Compiling, editing, and writing reports

    •   Data entry

    •   Other duties as required

    Who can Apply:

Family Physician- Part Time

  • The New Canadians Health Centre is currently recruiting for a Family Physician for a total of 0.2- 0.4 FTE coverage. This could be from one or two providers. We are also looking for locum physicians for ad hoc coverage.

    The New Canadians Health Centre provides multidisciplinary primary health care for government-assisted refugees. We are a team of family physicians, working within a community health centre model to support new Canadians. This is a unique opportunity to develop expertise in refugee health alongside an engaged and supportive group of clinicians. There are opportunities for ongoing learning related to refugee health and opportunities for teaching medical students and residents.

    Physicians will work 0.2-0.4 FTE with an equitable portion of on-call inclusive of weekends and statutory holidays. Locum physicians will be part of a pool of physicians who will be notified of available ad hoc shifts and will not participate in the on-call schedule. Remuneration is via a clinical Alternative Relationship Plan that has been negotiated with Alberta Health (Government of Alberta).

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    • MD, with a CCFP designation

    • CPSA registration, in good standing

    • CMPA coverage

    • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19

    • Experience with newcomer and refugee populations, tropical medicine training and additional language skills is an asset.

Nurse Practitioner- Part Time

  • Program Overview

    This role is employed through Edmonton North Primary Care Network and physically located at the New Canadians Health Centre as part of Edmonton North Primary Care Network’s resourcing program. The New Canadians Health Centre provides coordinated and multidisciplinary refugee-centered primary care utilizing a shared care model for a target population of government assisted and privately sponsored refugees as well as refugee claimants. Informed by refugees’ priorities that are communicated through culturally, linguistically, medically, and epidemiologically appropriate assessments, the supports create ready access to a comprehensive set of clinic and community services.

    Role Description

    The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will work collaboratively with the patients, family physicians, and other team members to provide comprehensive care to patients of the New Canadians Health Centre. The NP will assess patients, as well as develop, implement, and evaluate care plans for patients both directly and indirectly. The NP will work to full scope of practice as an autonomous primary health care provider with an emphasis on providing evidence-based care, education, and guidance to patients with chronic disease, as well as supporting the successful transition of patients to community practices.

    Education/Experience

    • Must have an active professional registration with the College Registered Nurse of Alberta (CRNA) as a Nurse Practitioner within the knowledge, skills and authority to provide care to Family-All Ages.

    • Master’s or equivalent in Nursing

    • Minimum of three (3) years or more of related experience*

    • Advanced skills in caring for patients with chronic, complex, and/or specialized needs

    • Current BLS CPR is required

    • Proof of immunizations is required

    • Diabetic Educator (CDE) would be considered an asset

    • Experience in newcomer or refugee health would be considered an asset

    • Fluency in a second language, an asset

    * Nurse Practitioners who are either newly certified with less than three years of experience or will be graduating may be considered.

    Required Skills

    • Advanced decision-making skills in assessment, diagnosis, care management and evaluation for patients of all ages care

    • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner in addition to being able to identify the most appropriate method of communication

    • Comfortable and experienced working with marginalized and vulnerable populations

    • Ability to organize time, multi-task and set priorities to meet various deadlines and maintain a flexible schedule

    • Ability to work with minimal supervision

    • Strong organizational skills
