The NCHC is all about dignity, belonging, and equitable access to care for newcomers and refugees!

Who we are:

The New Canadians Health Centre is a dedicated primary healthcare Centre in Edmonton that supports refugees and newly arrived Canadians through culturally and linguistically appropriate care. The Centre was created in response to the complex health challenges many refugees face—challenges shaped by trauma, displacement, long periods in refugee camps, and the stress of resettlement.

What We Do:

NCHC provides integrated, interdisciplinary healthcare that brings together:

• Physicians and nurses offering preventive screening, immunizations, and treatment for acute and chronic conditions.

• Mental health therapists providing counselling and referrals.

• Settlement counsellors and cultural brokers supporting housing, navigation of health and social systems, and community integration.

• Language and cultural interpreters ensuring patients can communicate in the language they feel safest and most understood in.

The Centre aims to transition patients to a permanent family physician in the community within approximately two years of arrival.

Our Vision

Healthy and productive new Canadians contribute to the social, cultural, and economic growth of the city of Edmonton and the province of Alberta.

Our Mission

The NCHC aims to improve the health and well-being of refugees through the provision of culturally and linguistically competent healthcare to facilitate successful integration into the community

OUR PRINCIPLES

  • Promote Social Justice, Equity & Inclusion

We focus on reducing inequalities and increasing access to opportunities and conditions conducive to health & well-being for all.

  • Community Owned

We engage communities in decision-making and provide opportunities for communities to build and strengthen their social capital and sense of belonging at the NCHC and with the larger Edmonton community.

  • Welcoming & Inclusive

We recognize patients as partners in the care process so that they experience care and support in ways that they wish to be treated. We interact with patients in a way that respects them.

  • Adopt a Social Model of Health

We provide a holistic approach in caring for individuals and families which addresses the broader social determinants of health.

  • Act Collaboratively

We provide care and support that is grounded on collaborative decision-making, is coordinated among service providers and is flexible and responsive to differing and emerging needs and desires.

  • Create a Supportive Learning Community

We create opportunities for service providers to learn and reflect, building capacity within the Centre and into the broader.
